A look at some of our past major 'Great Events'

2008

The 9th  W.S.F World Master Squash Championships: Great Events provided event management services to the Organizing Committee for this event held in October 2008. 765 competitors from 35 countries; over 2500 squash games, a street parade, party night at The Holy Grail, and a fantastic finale Dinner at The Wigram Airforce museum made for a great week for the players and for the city.

World Vintage Rugby Carnival: This event, the third held, brought around 700 people into Christchurch to have a week of fun and rugby and socializing. Teams from Australia, Norfolk Island, South Africa France, USA, Spain and New Zealand enjoyed the opportunity to play and party. Donations from the auction of Team jerseys and street banners will be made to The Bone Marrow Trust.

2005

8th World Maxibasketball Championships.  Close to 1,000 visitors from 27 countries attended the World Maxibasketball Championships for a superb show of skills in the new basketball stadium at QEII.  A magnificent event over 10 days showing that Masters are definitely not slowing down!

$12,000 was donated to Canterbury Basketball Association, and hundreds of balls were donated to local schools. 

2003

The World Wheelchair Games with 10 sports was staged from 25 October to 2 November and was interwoven with the ISOD (Amputees) World Track and Field Championships and the Boccia World Cup.  All in, 900 competitors in wheelchairs, a further 500 other athletes and officials took part in the 3 events.

Great Events provided a full event management service to these events including arranging a fleet of 16 adapted buses, 14 venues, accommodation acceptable to the disabled athletes and all other activities – parades, opening ceremonies, final functions, all meals for participants and officials, and full financial reporting.

Donations of $15,000 to Paralympics New Zealand, equipment value $30,000 to Boccia New Zealand.

2002

IX FINA World Masters Championships - 2,900 athletes competing over 12 days.  An amazing 104 World Masters records were broken in the pool (diving, swimming, synchronized swimming, water polo and open water swimming).

Equipment was donated to Canterbury Swimming, Canterbury Water Polo, and QEII after this event.

The World Firefighters Games - Close to 2,000 people took part in an amazing number of events from the Toughest Firefighter Alive to Horseshoes.

Great Events provided a full management service to support the Local Firefighters that included accommodation arrangements for the visitors and financial management.  A marquee 120m x 25m in Hagley Park was the focal point for all the social activities and some sports.

Donations were made to the New Zealand Heart Foundation, Burns Unit, and St Vincent de Paul.

2000

Great Events staged the New Zealand Corporate Games in Christchurch.  Around 900 athletes in a dozen different sports from local businesses took part.

 

1999

The World Wheelchair Games (International Stoke Mandeville Wheelchair Sports Federation). Close to 800 people including 400 confined to wheelchairs visited Christchurch to compete in 11 sports over 8 days. Great Events again provided a full event management service for this event.

Donations to Parafed Canterbury of $20,000 for administration, $10,000 to Canterbury Paralympians, $7,400 to Parafed New Zealand, and equipment valued at $4,000 to Paralympics New Zealand.

1998

The International Paralympic World Swimming Championships which brought 800 contestants and officials to Christchurch for a very special week.  Great Events provided a full event management service for this event. This event was also awarded the Sir Richard Hadlee Event of the Year.

Donations of $25,000 were made to Parafed Canterbury, $20,500 to Paralympics New Zealand, and $7,000 to the Halberg Trust.

1996

Great Events handled the arrangements for the Asia Pacific Parliamentarians Conference on the Economic Development in 1996.  Set in Cromwell, the abundance of fresh air, and lack of people was a feature for many visitors from heavily populated countries. 

Great Events managed the Montana Winter Carnival, which was quickly securing itself as a regular annual event for Christchurch.  Truckloads of snow were shipped into Cathedral Square for extreme skiing displays, one of many exciting events at the Carnival.

1995

With Neil as Festival Director and Renata as the Administration Manager, the World Golden Oldies Rugby Festival, was awarded the outstanding event in 1995, winning New Zealand Tourism’s Event of the Year; the premier award The Tourism NZ Supreme Awards, and The Sir Richard Hadlee Trust Event of the Year.  6,000 people can’t be wrong – "it was awesome".

Donations to Spinal Unit, Burwood, to Cantabrians Rugby Club, and medical equipment to all host rugby clubs totalled $50,000.
